CAN'T PLAY WIPEOUT SERIES! HEEEEEEEELP! lol.
The other day I just learned to take apart a PS2 and clean the lens. When I put it back together it wouldn't power on, no signs of life. I took it apart again and discovered the stupid little power strip cord from the reset and open button had come out of it's port/socket (or whatever it's called, lol). After some frustration and having to learn how to take the bottom part of the console apart, I finally got it re-attached, and put it back together. Then the disc tray wouldn't work, lol. So, after taking it apart and messing with it again a couple times I got everything working...and now it's as good as new (at least until the lens/laser dies, lol). You learn something new everyday I guess .
My reason for doing this is I have not been able to play a couple of my PS1 games. I can't play Wipeout XL or Wipeout 3, because the system reads them as audio discs instead of games. I tried diagnostics, and both games have been resurfaced and still do the same thing...even after wasting hours taking apart my console to clean the lens. I just want my Wipeout damnit! XD Wipeout Fusion SUCKS! Well it doesn't "suck", it's just not the same. Do any of you know why these won't work? I have heard that PS2 just doesn't play certain PS1 games so I'm assuming that's it, or the laser's getting too old.
On a final note, I have two questions: Do any of you have a WORKING PS1
you would be willing to give or sell to me? I just miss my Wipeout games, lol. Second question: Do you know if an old model of PS2 or the newer "slim" model would make a difference? Would the slim be more likely to play Wipeout games? We're getting another PS2 since my sister took mine over...but it's another "fat" model so I doubt it'll play the Wipeouts...unless each system varies enough for it to make a difference. My current PS2 will play games like Twisted Metal 2 and Darkstalkers 3, plus many others FINE. Wipeout is my favorite racing series, and I can't get a PS3 right now for the beautiful Wipeout Fury HD...the older games are my best bet, they're still great !
Any help or answers would be great, I've already looked around online and can't find much outside of "disc reading error" issues, which seems to be another problem outside of the audio thing. _________________ "Zombies do like the other, other white meat" - Dean Winchester |

The PS2 is an extremely faulty piece of hardware, especially the phat models. Typical symptoms of non working models are that it stops reading CD based discs, DVD based discs, DVD movies, or PS1 games. My first PS2 stopped reading PS1 games. The PS2 is basically a car. The more you drive/play it, the more it wears down until it stops working.
Your PS2 is not reading the game data on the discs any longer and is reading just the audio tracks. Yes the slim will read old games, and so would a functioning phat model assuming it hasn't worn down already. The PS2 didn't become the best selling console of all time because of reliability. _________________ On July 11 a creature was born, not of flesh...but of pure hatred.

Ahh I see, I should have got a slim one for our second one then, shoot. A friend is trying to talk me into just getting the games for my computer (now that this laptop is fixed) and using an adapter or something so I can use a controller. The thing is, even when my PS2 was brand new it wouldn't play Wipeout XL...very weird system, lol. At least they're pretty cheap to get now.
What about PS3s? How's the track record so far on that system? I heard that only the first models are backwards compatible. My family is interested in getting one, and just sharing it since there are games both my sister and I want...but it's probably going to be quite a while if we do. I also found my PS1 in the garage today, and...it worked on a couple of my games but froze after a few rounds of Darkstalkers 3, and it wants to read the Wipeout games as audio too, lol...freaking faulty software. I couldn't believe how retarded the inside of the PS2 was! The inner metal frame blocks where the cord/strip needed to be reattached, NEEDLESSLY...there is NO function for it overhanging the way it does. Since I couldn't get my fingers there I hand to use tweezers, lame. _________________ "Zombies do like the other, other white meat" - Dean Winchester |

I'm also going to have a look around on eBay, they're probably pretty cheap there. I found my old PS1 today, and it plays some games but freezes on almost everything and won't play the Wipeout games. I also just saw that they did a port of Wipeout Pulse (a PSP game) for the PS2, but it's only available in the UK I think X_X. There seriously needs to be more Wipeout games, lol. _________________ "Zombies do like the other, other white meat" - Dean Winchester |

Only the 20 and 60gb model PS3 is 100% backwards compatible with PS2 games. They have been off the market for at least two years. various models of the 40 and 80gb PS3 offer emulation with around half of the PS2 games working, and of the ones that do work there are issues with running. Most of the emulated PS2 compatible PS3 models are already phazed out. The current model of PS3, the PS3 slim, offers zero backwards compatibility with PS2. All models of PS3 play PS1 games through emulation.
The PS3 is by far the most reliable console sony has made to date. almost as reliable as a nintendo system but not quite. _________________ On July 11 a creature was born, not of flesh...but of pure hatred.

Hah hah No way is it Baltazars!
In Response to your PM no we are still very much together!
The PS1 belonged to a bloke named Greg, who is a long story that I think a few people know here.
I spent 2 years trying to give it back and he used it as an excuse to keep trying to find out where I was. I offered to mail it but that story goes long.
What I mean by Baltazar having the right to sell it is that stupid thing has no value to me and all I want to do is throw it out, so I gave it to him so he can sell it without my personal bias. _________________ And I want you so much

This is probably a stupid question but I don't know what you mean by "emulation". Is that something extra that people need to pay for, or is it built into the systems? That's very nice to know they can at least play all PS1 games XD...maybe when we eventually get a PS3 I'll finally be able to play Wipeout again, lol. I noticed that my Wipeout games skip even when played as an audio disc though (on about half of the songs!)...maybe the scratches are simply too deep, even after being buffed. I may just need to re-buy them.
DorianHolmes- Glad to know XD...sorry for the misunderstanding.
Yeah I have NOT had good luck with the PS1...the first one I bought died after about a year. Then we got another one and it had problems almost right away and we returned it. Then we got a 3rd one (the one I have now). I've had it for years, since I lived in Colorado...and it's only partially functional, it freezes allot and won't play certain games.
I've had my PS2 for maybe 7 or 8 years I think now? It's still working almost perfectly...very rarely will it freeze or not read a disc. When it doesn't read a disc, usually fiddling with it a bit will get it to work (hitting reset, taking the disc out, etc.). That's good to know they've improved with the PS3, they seem to be getting better with each system...gotta give them credit for that as much as I've complained about Sony XD. _________________ "Zombies do like the other, other white meat" - Dean Winchester |

Just get a PS2 slim, end of discussion.
Unless you want to track down a PS3 60gig with PS2 emulation, then you're best bet is just getting a PS2 slim. They're about the same price as a DS lite these days, at $99.99. _________________

Yeah you're probably right XD! We just got another PS2 that's a fat one though...so I'm just gonna have to suck it up for now if Wipeout won't play on that one. I think my original one is going to die any day/week/month though...so when it DOES I'll get a slim to replace it with as we want two in the house.
And then there's always the PS1 if I can get a hold of one, or trying to get the Wipeouts for PC. _________________ "Zombies do like the other, other white meat" - Dean Winchester |

My first PS2 broke after almost 2 years of having it. The motor for the disc drive wore out. If you haven't tampered with the system at all internally then they do have a trade n program where its 75 bucks and you get a refurbished model that is the same model # as yours.
I did that and the one I got works better than my original and has lasted me since 2005. It sucked though as mine broke when there was a game i really wanted to try coming out. Then I get a replacement , rent the game and it sucked ass. So I'm not sure what the moral of the story is. _________________ "You're not the real Santa Claus!"
